Authors: Diana Fruh * Dylan Fruh * Lynda Senko Here is the second installment of our archival records detailing a life threatening experience from the traveling show days in the early 1940's. Lynda Senko, John's daughter, recorded this story on her cassette recorder when John was about 80 years old. Dylan Fruh, John's great-grandson, spent countless hours enhancing and restoring it to a digital format. This audio picks up after a hired hand had fallen asleep at the wheel and the semi truck housing the priceless collection rolled on to it's top. John and Vicky May as well as three employees were inside. We hope you enjoy hearing how it turned out. Authors: Diana Fruh * Dylan Fruh * Lynda Senko This is a true archival piece. During John May's later years his daughter, Lynda Senko, used a Radio Shack cassette recorder to preserve the May family history. The original recording was in dire condition and in danger of being lost to time. Dylan Fruh, John's great-grandson, spent countless hours enhancing and restoring it to a digital format. We are so proud and excited to share this little snippet of history with you. In this Part One edition, John recalls one of the most harrowing stories from the traveling show days during the early 1940's. John and Vicky May were on their way from Edmonton to Regina, Alberta Canada. A hired hand was driving the semi truck which housed the priceless collection when he fell asleep at the wheel. The truck rolled upside down with a full tank of gasoline! Listen in to see how they made it through. Authors: Diana Fruh and Dylan Fruh It's opening day for our 2024 summer season and we have a great photo idea for your vacation album! Take your picture next to Herkimer, the World's Largest Beetle, and then head over to the May Museum showroom and get your pic next to a genuine Hercules beetle. Our statue of Herkimer is 48 times the size of an actual Hercules beetle. Authors: Diana Fruh and Dylan Fruh Many hours are spent each year maintaining the specimens in the collection here at the museum. Four generations of the May family have worked on this critical project. Currently, RJ Steer and Lynn Steer head up the team that works on preserving the insects. Enjoy some of the behind the scenes pictures. Authors: Diana Fruh and Dylan Fruh The annual tarantula migration is upon us here in southern Colorado. In honor of this yearly event, we created a video with some of the tarantulas here on display at the May Museum. Many of our specimens are actually from Colorado. Although they aren't as large as their Central and South American cousins they are just as impressive. After you've toured the May Museum, take a stroll through our gift shop. You'll be sure to find an unique souvenir from your visit. We feature many local artists and craftsman. Authors: Diana Fruh and Dylan Fruh Over the years, many museum visitors have asked about our unique Tiki statutes. In the 1950s, John and Vicky May operated the museum in Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida. John designed and built the museum building. Along with members of his family, they designed the museum motif and gave it a tropical feel. The three Tiki statues were hand carved by John from palm trees. The behind-the-scenes story, as told by John himself is as follows. The three characters from left to right are the Chief's wife, the Medicine Man and the Chief. As the wife looks on nervously, the Medicine Man informs the Chief that his wife is pregnant with their tenth child. |
